I have a ridiculously long drive to my office. Like, stupid long. It takes me about an hour and a half each way. About three hours a day are eating up just sitting in my car. Having said that, I love the people I work with and they make it worthwhile. They laugh at my terrible jokes and they think I know what the hell I am doing. Silly people.
Since I have so much time to myself, I have become a bit of a podcast kinda guy. Often times, I listen to ones about history or current events. But I also subscribe to several on sexual assault and dealing with trauma. Not really light listening or great for helping to disconnect from reality but sometimes, we have to lean in to the hard stuff.
Anyway, I decided to reach out to some of my favorite ones and ask if they might be willing to share my story and to my amazement, they were game!
The first one that I appeared on was Sexual Assault Survivor Stories with Dave Markel. Dave is a former detective and currently consults with police departments on how to conduct trauma informed investigations. His podcasts are sometimes just a survivor sharing their unfiltered story. Some of these shows are for an audience of one; the person sharing their story. And that is so important. Dave provides them with an opportunity to take back their story and that is so powerful. Some of the guests have been carrying a terrible experience and haven't been able to unburden themselves. What is so powerful to these episodes is that someone might hear themselves in the words of the guest and feel less alone, Othertimes, Dave has experts who deal with trauma and share strategies for managing it. And other times, he has pissed off dads on the podcasts.
Well, just this pissed off dad.
Please check out the episode let me know what you think of it. It was my very first one and I have to commend Dave for his magical editing skills. For someone who speaks for a living, you would have thought it was the first time I strung three words together if you had listened to the recording.
Dave is having an open conversation about sexual assault and trauma and we need to do more of that. We need survivors know that they are not alone and they should not be hiding in shame. Go check out his show and share it with others that could benefit from hearing it.
